There is an odd reality in nowadays, which is if people accidentally see an anal plug, they will frown and turn their heads away, shouting “Ah! What a pervert!”; but back in 1900, if people saw an anal plug, they would sincerely praise it, “Ah! It is as great an invention as aspirin!”

Back in the late 19th century, due to breakthroughs in observation technology of the microscopic world, medical technology began to show explosive growth. In 1804, smallpox was conquered by humans; in 1837, cells were observed by humans for the first time; in 1899, “aspirin”, the most widely used analgesic to date, was developed.

Hundreds of terminal illnesses that previously meant death to humans could now be easily cured like a cold. This gave everyone confidence in conquering all diseases. People at that time generally felt that humans had overcome the difficulties of pathogens and that soon no one would get sick anymore.

In an atmosphere where a disease is declared defeated every few days, the American gastroenterologist, Frank E. Young, was led to boldly declaring in 1893 that he had conquered “insanity.”

In a Medical News article, Dr. Yang made the following statement: “Three-quarters of the world’s mental disorders can be cured by the introduction of special rectal dilators.” It sounds bizarre that a gastroenterologist could claim that he could cure mental illness.

What is even more incredible is that the treatment of brain diseases actually needs to be done through the anus, which makes people wonder whether the patient’s brain grows in the anus, or whether Dr. Yang is deliberately challenging our IQ.

A journalist wrote an article pointing out the various loopholes in it and asked Dr. Yang in a friendly way, “Your strange ideas are obviously a bit crazy, so why don’t you use it on yourself first?”

After a bad start, the tenacious Dr. Yang decided to return to his familiar field – gastroenterology, to pursue career success and fame. He set about improving his rectal dilators, giving them exquisite packaging, and designed four different sizes, from the smallest 0.5 inches to the largest 4 inches, to meet the needs of different conditions. All this was to seek greater reputation and wealth in the medical community.

They are always low-key in appearance, carefully made of rare and expensive hard rubber, with streamlined heads designed like bullets to ensure smooth insertion into the target area.
The tail is cleverly protruding to prevent accidental sliding into the deep, and the overall structure is cleverly grasped by the sphincter, with a channel in the middle to eliminate discomfort. At that time, medical surgery could not cure the embarrassing disease of hemorrhoids, and urban white-collar workers silently endured the pain.
It was at this pain point that Dr. Young attracted everyone’s attention with his clever strategy, and quickly made a name for himself with the help of people’s infinite expectations for medical technology.

In 1905, Dr. Young spent a lot of money to buy a page in the Detroit Medical Magazine to advertise his products.

He named his product “Dr. Yang’s Butt Plug” and claimed that it could exercise the sphincter, relieve the symptoms of hemorrhoids within a few weeks, and eventually cure hemorrhoids. It could also treat intestinal diseases such as constipation and diarrhea.

Obviously, Dr. Yang is the marketing pioneer of TV shopping. He is well aware of the herd effect and herd mentality of consumers. In order to promote the product, he asked patients to tell their stories in person at the end of the 19th century and published them in newspapers.
“I was so scared that I almost fainted when I saw it for the first time, but now I can’t live without it. It really saved me.”

“First, heat the butt plug in warm water, then apply vaseline to lubricate, then squat down, or lie down comfortably on your side, and gently insert it into the rectum. I used to have very serious hemorrhoids, but now I insert it for about half an hour every day, and I have no symptoms.”
“I used to have very serious constipation. The doctor gave me these butt plugs and asked me to gradually adapt and replace them with larger ones. When I changed to the third one, hey! I was surprised to find that my constipation was cured!”
“It saved me and made me no longer troubled by chronic intestinal diseases. I think it is as great as aspirin!”
At the end of the advertisement, Dr. Yang came out to summarize, “No matter how good the treatment is, it is delayed. For the sake of prevention, I think every adult should have a set of butt plugs and wear them for about half an hour every day.”
———————————————————

Up to now, the design of butt plugs is diverse, and the development of 3D printing technology makes it more affordable and diversified. They have become a common prop in BDSM scenes, giving butt plugs more meaning, including the humiliation of having the body invaded.

In the past, some medical devices eventually evolved into today’s sex toys, such as straitjackets, latex gloves, oral retainers, etc. The history of these items is full of colorful stories, and our attitude towards them should be more open and understanding.
The history of butt plugs is full of drama, and its evolution from serious medical tools to sex toys reflects the changes in social concepts.
Although we may look at these items differently today, they are still part of human creation and have their own history and culture.
Most importantly, no matter how we look at these items, we should use them with safety and health as the premise and use them carefully.
Whether it is a medical tool or a sex toy, proper use and maintenance are crucial to ensure our health and happiness.
In this diverse world, we should respect everyone’s choices and preferences, whether it is medical care or sex experience.
Ultimately, every item has its purpose and history, and we can draw more inspiration and understanding from it. May every reader have a healthy and enjoyable life, no matter how they choose to define it.
